The Power of Meekness

“Do not repay anyone evil for evil. Be careful to do what is right in the eyes of everyone. If it is possible, as far as it depends on you, live at peace with everyone.”

Romans 12:17–18 (NIV)

In the New Testament, meekness is far more than passivity — it’s a posture of strength under control. Scripture uses the concept of meekness to describe five distinct attitudes that shape how we relate to God and to one another. Use these notes to follow along, fill in the blanks, and reflect on each one.

Five Attitudes of Meekness in the New Testament

  1. An Attitude of ____________________. Colossians 3:12 (NIV)

“Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience.”

  1. An Attitude of ____________________. Matthew 5:39

“But I tell you, do not resist an evil person. If anyone slaps you on the right cheek, turn to them the other cheek also.”

  1. An Attitude of ____________________. James 1:21

“Therefore, get rid of all moral filth and the evil that is so prevalent and humbly accept the word planted in you, which can save you.”

  1. An Attitude of ____________________. Ephesians 4:2

“Be completely humble and gentle; be patient, bearing with one another in love.”

  1. An Attitude of _____________________. Romans 12:19

“Do not take revenge, my dear friends, but leave room for God’s wrath, for it is written: ‘It is mine to avenge; I will repay,’ says the Lord.”
