Sermon Notes for Sunday March 1, 2026 – Set Free By the Truth (Part 2): Guarding Your Identity in Christ
When Satan can’t destroy the truth, he tries to distort it—and when he can’t keep you from Jesus, he attacks your identity in Him. Here’s how God’s truth sets you free indeed.

Set Free By the Truth (Part 2): Guarding Your Identity in Christ
“Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” — John 8:32 (NIV)
“So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.” — John 8:36 (NIV)
Freedom isn’t just a feeling—it’s a person. Jesus doesn’t merely tell the truth; He is the Truth. And when we build our lives on Him, we step into a kind of freedom the enemy can’t manufacture, and the world can’t take away.
This message is Part 2 of “Set Free By the Truth.” And today we’re looking at a major battleground: truth vs. lies about your identity in Christ.
Satan Corrupts the Truth
One of the most consistent themes in Scripture is that Satan targets truth. He doesn’t usually come with something that looks obviously evil—he comes with something almost true.
1) Satan has not changed his tactics
What worked in the garden still gets used today: twist the truth, question God’s goodness, and confuse identity.
2) We can’t have God’s truth “our way”
A huge temptation is reshaping God’s Word to match our preferences. But truth isn’t truth if we customize it. God’s truth transforms us—we don’t transform it.
Your Identity in Jesus Christ
If Satan can’t keep you from salvation, he’ll try to keep you from living like someone who’s saved. That’s why he aims for your identity.
Satan undermines your identity in Christ
He works to:
-
make you forget who you are,
-
make you doubt what God has spoken,
-
make you live from old labels instead of new life.
Peter: A Picture of Identity Under Pressure
Peter’s story is a powerful case study in spiritual attack and spiritual restoration.
Peter was “the rock” — Matthew 16:13–19
Jesus speaks identity and purpose over Peter.
Jesus prays for Peter — Luke 22:31–34
Jesus also exposes the attack: Satan wants to sift Peter like wheat. But Jesus doesn’t just warn Peter—He prays for him and points him toward restoration.
That matters: even when the enemy attacks your confidence, Jesus is committed to your future.
Six Key Privileges We Have in Christ
Your identity in Christ isn’t motivational talk—it comes with real privileges that shape how you live, pray, and fight.
1) We can approach God with confidence
“Let us then approach God’s throne of grace with confidence…” — Hebrews 4:16 (NIV)
You’re not an outsider begging for scraps. In Christ, you have access to God’s grace and help—right on time.
2) We have the right to become children of God
“…to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God.” — John 1:12 (NIV)
Your identity is not earned. It’s received. You belong.
3) We are sealed with the Holy Spirit
“…you were marked in him with a seal, the promised Holy Spirit.” — Ephesians 1:13 (NIV)
God doesn’t just forgive you—He marks you as His.
4) We are redeemed and forgiven
“In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins…” — Ephesians 1:7 (NIV)
Your past is not your prison. Jesus paid for your freedom.
5) We are chosen and set apart
“But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation…” — 1 Peter 2:9–10 (NIV)
You’re not “just trying to survive.” You are God’s special possession, called out of darkness into His light.
6) We are overcomers by faith
“For everyone born of God overcomes the world…” — 1 John 5:4–5 (NIV)
Your notes list this as John 5:4–5, but the wording matches 1 John 5:4–5. Either way, the truth stands: faith in Jesus is victory.
Closing Encouragement
The enemy’s strategy is consistent: corrupt truth and undermine identity. But God’s strategy is greater: restore truth and strengthen identity.
If you’ve been battling shame, confusion, fear, or spiritual pressure, don’t just ask, “What’s happening to me?”
Ask, “What truth am I forgetting—and who does God say I am?”
Because when the Son sets you free, you’re free indeed.
